MECHANICAL FAILURE KNOCKS JAMES OUT OF DALLAS SX
With six rounds of West Coast battles now in the books, the 2013 AMA Supercross series made its way through Dallas, Texas on Saturday night en route to its annual East Coast swing, and James was eager to use Cowboys Stadium as a springboard to greater success as he approaches familiar grounds. Unfortunately, a mechanical failure in the clutch mechanism of his Yoshimura Suzuki led to a premature ending to his night, leaving James sidelined and looking toward Atlanta for that illusive first win of the series.
A stacked gate of riders (Ryan Villopoto, Trey Canard, and Chad Reed among others) greeted James in 450SX heat one, but the determined Floridian wouldn’t be phased as he dropped the hammer and blasted through turn number one in the second spot. With nothing but a win on his mind, JS7 stalked Villopoto for a few laps while studying his lines, and then put a textbook pass on the Kawasaki rider to take the lead. Looking smooth and comfortable out front, James motored on to the heat win with authority, as Villopoto crossed the line in the second spot.
Later in the evening, as the top-20 qualifiers were busy loading into the gate for the 450SX main event, James and his mechanic (Lee McCollum) detected an unforeseen clutch issue that would prevent him from starting the race. Classy in defeat, James had this to say just before watching his competitors battle for the Dallas win…
“I’m really bummed right now, but this is not the team’s fault. Everyone has been working really hard… This is just one of those flukes. I’m already out of the championship, but I wanted to come out here and race hard for my fans and for my team. The heat race definitely gave us some confidence tonight, but we’ll just have to wait until next week for a chance at the main event win.”
