Unfortunately, despite a sincere attempt to make a strong return to racing, the rush to do so was quite visible when the dust finally settled in upstate New York on August 14th. Though James had a good run in Moto 1, the lack of physical preparation and challenges with bike set-up forced him off the track early in Moto 2. Though they’ve had some time to make adjustments since leaving Unadilla, James and the team have decided they just aren’t ready to compete in the series at the level they are accustomed to.

“At this point, I honestly just hope my fans will understand,” James commented. “I said before that I wanted to be on the track starting with Hangtown, but the slow healing nature of my wrist injury made it impossible to do so. Watching race after race and not being a part of the series has been very difficult. All along my motivation was to get back to racing and return to the outdoor series for my fans and sponsors. And though my wrist is feeling great, it became obvious that I’m just not ready to race at that level yet. As much as I’d like to be out there, I need more time to prepare so that I don’t put my entire career at risk by getting injured again. I’d like to apologize to my fans first and foremost, as well as to the series and my sponsors for being unable to continue.”

James’ planned return to racing is now set for Anaheim 1 in January. Of all people, James knows exactly what it takes to prepare for a Supercross championship run, and he’s now digging in deep to put in the hard work required over the next few months to have a successful 2011 season!

“We had every intention of racing Southwick and beyond,” commented L&M Team Manager Larry Brooks. “But sometimes you have to see the bigger picture and make a decision based on what’s right, not on what you’d like to do at the time. We’re a Team and we have to do what we feel is best to ensure we have every opportunity to win the next Championship.”

With five of the best motocross athletes in the world, including your very own JS7, creating a one-off motocross track with the gnarliest mix of obstacles ever assembled, Metallicross is sure to be an instant revelation! Mixed with live, head-banging metal music as a soundtrack, the course will debut dirt-to-concrete whoops, a creek crossing, explosions, a two-story drop into the first turn, and much, much more!

With an already creative mind on a motorcycle, James immediately jumped at the opportunity to be part of the building process, as he’ll accompany fellow two-wheel stars Travis Pastrana, Ronnie Renner, David Knight, and Geoff Aaron in designing the track.

“I have always had some pretty crazy thoughts about obstacles and elements to a track. Now with this special event it gives me the blank canvas I need to put these crazy elements together,” James commented.

Anyone who thinks they can tackle a James Stewart-inspired track will have two chances to make the show, starting with a qualifier on September 25th at E-Street MX (Riverfront Track) in Sacramento, California, and on October 2nd at Pala Raceway.

“You can look forward to some wild stuff that will take each athlete’s absolute best to navigate and survive.”

James’ return has been highly anticipated by all, and the famed Unadilla circuit on August 14th in New Berlin, New York will mark the site of his official return to the Nationals after a near two-year absence. Having conquered the series with a perfect 24-24 season in 2008, the biggest question still remaining on everyone’s mind is if he can derail series points leader Ryan Dungey from his amazing win streak. Who’s got their money on JS7?

We spoke with James just before his flight, and his confidence was soaring pretty high… “Yeah, since I’m a Red Bull rider and can’t actually be judged in the event, I figure I might as well just go ahead and break the distance record so that everyone remembers me,” said James with a grin.

Unfortunately for our boy JS, however, flying a stationary motorcycle off of a dock (with no motor) wasn’t quite as easy as he thought it might be; though James did put in a solid attempt, his distance was quite a bit shy of the winning team’s. Still, it was all in the name of fun for Stewart, and he definitely accomplished that goal.

“Red Bull Flugtag in Miami was a blast! It took me out of being so serious from what I normally do, which is racing. Red Bull does so many cool things and being one of their athletes, the opportunities are just unlimited. I want to go for the record again!”
