After weeks of carefully sculpting, polishing, and tweaking his YZ450F to make it sea- and air-worthy, James Stewart finally tried his hand at the Red Bull Flugtag event this weekend in Miami, Florida.
We spoke with James just before his flight, and his confidence was soaring pretty high… “Yeah, since I’m a Red Bull rider and can’t actually be judged in the event, I figure I might as well just go ahead and break the distance record so that everyone remembers me,” said James with a grin.
Unfortunately for our boy JS, however, flying a stationary motorcycle off of a dock (with no motor) wasn’t quite as easy as he thought it might be; though James did put in a solid attempt, his distance was quite a bit shy of the winning team’s. Still, it was all in the name of fun for Stewart, and he definitely accomplished that goal.
“Red Bull Flugtag in Miami was a blast! It took me out of being so serious from what I normally do, which is racing. Red Bull does so many cool things and being one of their athletes, the opportunities are just unlimited. I want to go for the record again!”

The rumors have been circulating for quite a while now, and it’s time to announce that the rumors are absolutely true! James will be competing this coming weekend (July 10th) at the Red Bull Flugtag in Miami, Florida aboard the most bizarre YZ450F you’ve ever seen! What in the world is Flugtag, you might ask?
Red Bull Flugtag challenges teams of everyday people to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 30-foot high deck in hopes of achieving flight! Flugtag may mean “flying day” in German, but all these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below. They are judged not only on their flight’s distance, but creativity and showmanship, as well.
To help challenge the flight record that currently stands at 155 feet, James enlisted the engineering help of Randy Yoho to modify his Yami, and the human rocket power of good friends Anthony Paggio and Eric Sorby to help get him off the ground.
